Science Pub: “Driving Change: Alternative Fuel Strategies and Athlete Branding in the Modern Era”

Sip your favorite brew, while you learn a thing or two! Science Pub is an opportunity to enjoy learning about interesting topics in an informal atmosphere. Just bring your curiosity and a thirst to learn!

There are 2 ways to be at this event:

  1. In Person – Paradise Creek Brewery will be seating indoors at 100% capacity and the pub talk will be broadcast/projected on a the large projection screen in the pub/restaurant area.
  2. On Zoom – Register for the Zoom Talk HERE. Place a food/drink order for pick up at Paradise Creek Brewery’s Downtown Restaurant – 245 SE Paradise St, Pullman. Local delivery is also available. Tip: Place your order early so it’s ready by Pub talk time.

Join Josh Heyne and Cara Hawkins-Jedlicka on April 16th for their pub talk, “Driving Change: Alternative Fuel Strategies and Athlete Branding in the Modern Era”.

Josh Heyne will delve into the latest advancements and challenges in alternative fuel technology, highlighting its potential to reshape energy consumption. Cara Hawkins-Jedlicka will discuss the evolving landscape of athlete branding, dissecting the implications of Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) rights on endorsement deals and sponsorships especially in the evolution of women’s collegiate sport. This pub talk hopes to offer valuable insights into the realms of sustainable energy solutions and athlete representation, sparking critical dialogue on their shared impact and future trajectories.

Cara Hawkins-Jedlicka is a scholarly assistant professor in the Edward R. Murrow College of communication.  Her research examines the intersection of brand, women’s sport communication and influencer culture. Her most recent research examines women athletes’ brand images in the NIL Era and has a forthcoming book chapter title “Putting the Image in NIL: How Women’s Collegiate Basketball Players Use Instagram and TikTok to Build Their Personal Brand”.  She has more than a decade’s worth of experience as a content producer and strategic communicator specializing in digital advertising strategy, with an emphasis in social media and online communities. She is also convinced that Caitlin Clark has no idea how to use Tik-Tok.

Dr. Joshua Heyne is Director of the Bioproducts, Sciences, and Engineering Lab (BSEL) and Co-director of the WSU-PNNL Bioproducts Institute (BIO-IN) on the WSU Tri-Cities campus. Heyne’s collaborations with dozens of companies, academic laboratories and national laboratories establish partnerships for sustainable aviation fuel development.
